IMPORTANT FIRST-YEAR COMPETENCY FEATURE
One of the most important areas addressed by this toolkit is first-year competency scheduling.
For applicable moderate- and high-complexity testing, CLIA requires personnel competency assessments at least twice during the first year of testing patient specimens at the laboratory and annually thereafter.
The toolkit supports documentation of the initial patient-testing date, first-year assessment milestones, assessor records, and evidence completion.
The Excel workbook contains six-month and first-year planning calculations. Laboratories must review these dates against applicable regulatory requirements and their approved policies.
**Training and competency assessment are separate activities.** Completion of training alone does not establish personnel competency.
